How Does Acupuncture work?

This is a brief explanation for the question, how does acupuncture work? Please contact us at the clinic for a full personalized discussion on the topic.

Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin needles, some times more appropriately called filaments, into points on the body along meridians. These meridians are like rivers or channels of energy that run from your hands to your feet, into your head and have internal pathways that go to each vital organ. Each meridian is named for the organ that it connects with.
The meridians are very close to, but do not touch the nerves, therefore when a sterile metal needle is inserted into a point on a meridian an electrical impulse is trigged by the interaction of the metal needle with the body's electrical system (the nervous system). This interaction causes a message to be sent to the brain which effects blood and fluid circulation as well as brain chemistry which in turn changes the body's chemistry.

The increase in circulation and the change in body chemistry allow the body to repair itself. By having increased blood flow more oxygenated blood can get to the injured or blocked area. Inflammation can be more effectively cleared out and stress relieving brain chemistry will be increased.
